Turo host personal insurance requirements

Turo’s Terms of Service require that host comply with all applicable laws and regulations. Which include registration and minimum insurance requirements for your vehicle.

Turo requires host to keep their personal insurance card in their vehicle at all times. Protection plans offered by Turo, is provided by a third-party policy and the guest’s own insurance. However, host must keep their personal insurance card, registration, and incident information card in their vehicle. These serve as proof of financial responsibility if a guest is pulled over in a traffic stop.

US

In the US host should check their state laws for specific registration requirements. States will generally require that hosts demonstrate financial responsibility to register their car. Which is usually accomplished by having personal car insurance. Insurance made available through Turo may not be used to satisfy that requirement.

  • List an eligible vehicle
  • Insure that vehicle with any insurance provider that doesn’t prohibit the car from being booked on a peer-to-peer carsharing platform

Canada

Hosts in Alberta, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec who want to choose a protection plan offered via Turo must:

  • List an eligible vehicle
  • Insure that vehicle with any insurance provider that doesn’t prohibit the car from being booked on a peer-to-peer car sharing platform. See a list of Canadian insurers that permit car sharing.

Hosts outside of these provinces may participate in Turo as Commercial Hosts.

United Kingdom

Hosts in the UK who want to choose a protection plan offered via Turo must:

  • List an eligible vehicle
  • Insure that vehicle with any insurance provider that doesn’t prohibit the car from being booked on a person-to-person carsharing platform

Commercial Hosts

Commercial hosts in countries outside the US, Canada, and the UK must offer their own commercial rental liability insurance directly to guests. This insurance must meet the minimum applicable requirements in the region. It must also meet Turo’s commercial rental insurance requirements. These requirements also apple to hosts and rental car companies in the US, Canada, and the UK who decline a Turo protection plan. Commercial Hosts must also disclose any additional fees and policies in their listings. They must also discuss their coverage limits and associated costs with their guest before the trip starts.
