What Is Via?

Via is an on-demand transit system that books multiple passengers heading in the same direction into a shared vehicle.

How Does Via Work For Riders?

  • Set your pickup and drop off to request a ride.
  • Via will match you with a driver headed your way.
  • Via’s smart pickup coordination will direct you to a nearby corner to meet your driver.

Ride Options Riders Have To Choose From

ViaExpress: Express is still a shared ride service. However, with express riders will be taken on a more direct route to their destination.


Private Ride: With this option you can ride by yourself and avoid wasting time on mid-trip stops.
Note: Unlike Uber and Lyft rides standard, Via private rides still require you to meet your driver at a nearby corner instead of right at your preferred pick-up spot.


Shared Taxi: If you prefer to be charged by the meter or to ride with a professional driver. You can request a taxi ride through the app and meet the driver at a designated street corner near you. Also, with SharedTaxi you may have other riders join your trip. If this should occur, you will save 40%. But, if no one joins, you will pay the full taxi fare.

Requirements To Become A Driver For Via

  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • At least one year of U.S. driving experience
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Possess a TLC license (for drivers in New York City). Note that Via can help you with this process, so you can still apply even if you don’t have a TLC license

Vehicle Requirements For Via

  • Pass a vehicle inspection (for drivers in Chicago).
  • Have valid vehicle insurance and registration.
  • Have a vehicle that meets your city requirements:
  • New York City — TLC-licensed vehicle of any color that has a leather interior
  • Chicago — Model year 2010 or newer for non-luxury vehicles and model year 2005 or newer for luxury vehicles.
  • Washington, D.C. — Model year 2010 or newer with a private (i.e., non-government) license plate.
